Some 75 professional fishermen are on the St. Johns River and area waterways today on the first day of the Bassmaster Elite Series in Palatka. Weather is predicted to be just about perfect today although a mini-nor’easter is expected to move in Friday night and that may cause some issues during the four-day event that runs through Sunday.

An early morning wreck in Putnam County has left one person dead, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The accident happened on State Road 207 and Cracker Swamp Road. That’s the same area where another wreck with injuries occurred two days ago. This morning’s wreck is under investigation by FHP.

Blue Crab Festival in Palatka has gotten a shot in the arm as Palatka Young Professionals agreed to head up a revitalized, revamped version of the popular Memorial Day Weekend event.  Buddy Thompson, who has overseen the festival for several years, didn’t hold one last year and had announced there wouldn’t be one this year. Palatka City Commissioners, however, want to see the event happen this year. PYP will be pulling in other groups to make the new version of the festival work.

Fishermen on the river and runners on the roadways this weekend as the 2019 Iron Horse Endurance Run takes place in the Florahome area of western Putnam County. The race starts at 7 a.m. and continues until Sunday morning at 11 a.m. If you’d like to volunteer, call 386-546-1668.

JEA, which serves a portion of St. Johns County, holds an open house meeting tonight to tell people who live near U.S. 1 and Race Track Road about its latest improvement project. New electric transmission poles and lines are going along portions of U.S. 1 and Race Track as the electric company works to keep up with power demands in the rapidly growing area.

Electronic license plate readers helped law enforcement find a missing Flagler County man in two hours Wednesday. When David Triplett, 86, didn’t return to his Flagler home after running errands his caretaker called authorities and a statewide Silver Alert was issued. A reader spotted the man’s SUV in St. Johns County and Triplett was returned home. Authorities can use the readers to search for criminals, missing people and stolen vehicles.

An inmate from Flagler County’s jail is in the hospital in critical condition. Anthony Fennick, 23, was taken to AdventHealth Flagler County Monday reportedly after having a high fever and rash for several days. The case is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. A private company is contracted to provide medical service for inmates.

One Book One Putnam holds a book discussion of this year’s selection – Because of Winn Dixie – tonight at Bostwick Library Branch at 5:30 p.m. Special guests will be Betsy and Gabe. Gabe’s the dog children in Bostwick get to read to once a week.

Birds are the thing in Flagler County this weekend as the popular Birds of a Feather Fest returns to the Palm Coast Community Center. It’s a fun birding and nature fest featuring guided birding, photography, workshops, social events and a keynote speech by National Audubon Society’s David Ringer. The fest runs Friday through Sunday.
