An amphitheater and parking garage planned for the Mission Nombre de Dios are on hold as Bishop Felipe Estevez reviews the project. Diocese of St. Augustine has withdrawn the applications filed for a Comprehensive Plan amendment and rezoning pending the review. The Mission on San Marco Avenue is where Pedro Menendez landed in 1565 and the site of the cross that dominates the city’s skyline. Residents have questioned the plan citing traffic concerns and what the changes would do to neighborhoods.
In Palatka the St. Johns River is the place to be this weekend as the 30th annual Wolfson Children’s Hospital Bass Tournament takes place. On Thursday Chris and Nikkie Cercy of Middleburg won the Lads & Lasses Tournament with a five-bass total of 24.03 pounds that included a 7.58 pound largemouth bass. Today it’s the VIP & Sponsors Tournament. Saturday hundreds of anglers take to the waterway at safelight and a day of fishing. The public will gather for the weigh-in in the afternoon on the banks of the St. Johns.
A knife fight at a school bus stop in Bunnell in under investigation. Early reports indicate two boys argued on the bus and when they got off at Chapel and Hope streets the fight began. A 16-year-old reportedly pulled a knife and cut the other, 13, on the neck. According to authorities the victim was not seriously injured. The two fled the scene but were eventually tracked down. Charges are expected.
In Flagler County, the Choral Arts Society holds their spring concert at 7 p.m. tonight and at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Palm Coast. Flagler Pier Fishing Tournament begins at 6 a.m. Saturday at the pier. In Bunnell it’s the family-friendly Bunnell Bonanza from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the historic Coquina City Hall.
In St. Augustine the finale for the Romanza Festivale is tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Pacetti Bay Middle School as the St. Augustine Concert Band performs. Expect both classical music and a tribute to Satchmo, the one and only Louis Armstrong. At 2 p.m. go to the Bunco Party hosted by the Pilot Club of St. Augustine at Memorial Lutheran Church. Food, beverages and fun at the fundraiser. The Furry Paws Festival is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at World Golf Village Neighborhood Dog Park. The fundraiser for K9s for Warriors includes dog fun, dogs for adoption and the Dashing Dachshund Doggie Race. At the St. Augustine Art Association on Marine Street get a look at what artists from around the country painted during the recent paint out “Where Art Meets History”. The show is free. Congrats to Jeff Markowsky of Savannah who won the best of show.
In Putnam County volunteers will be turning out at 22 locations to take part in Saturday morning’s annual clean up. Keep Putnam Beautiful is sponsoring. In Palatka St. Monica’s Catholic Church Knights of Columbus hold a yard sale at the Parish Hall on South Fourth Street from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tonight in Palatka it’s Everything Chocolate at the Larimer Arts Center, 216 Reid Street. The fundraiser is put on by the Arts Council of Greater Palatka and offers chocolate and champagne as well as High Life Jazz featuring the Harry Rios Trio with Margie Nelson. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
