AN ACTIVE STRUCTURE FIRE AT THE GEORGIA PACIFIC PLANT ON COUNTY ROAD 216 IN PALATKA WEDNESDAY DREW FIRE CREWS FROM THE AREA. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, THE FIRE CONTINUED FOR EIGHT HOURS WITH THE PALATKA FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDING AS WELL AS PUTNAM FIRE RESCUE AND VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS INCLUDING THE STATION 5 SOUTHWEST VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT AND EAST PALATKA FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE FIRE WAS IN THE TISSUE MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN SEVERAL AREAS. HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY WERE ADDITIONAL CHALLENGES FACED IN THE FIGHT. NO SERIOUS INJURIES WERE REPORTED ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS.

MORE THAN A DOZEN FLAGLER COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES PURSUED A STOLEN CAR AND ITS TWO INHABITANTS WEDNESDAY NIGHT. THE MEN ENDED UP BAILING FROM A STOLEN 2019 HONDA AT RIVIERA DRIVE SHORTLY AFTER 8 P.M. LAST NIGHT AND SWAM ACROSS A CANAL TO AVOID DEPUTIES, ACCORDING TO THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE. FLAGLER COUNTY LIFE FLIGHT WAS IN THE AIR ASSISTING WITH THE SEARCH. A LICENSE PLATE READER HIT ON U.S. 1 SET OFF THE ALARM ABOUT THE STOLEN VEHICLE.

IT TOOK A TASER AND A K9 TO FINALLY SUBDUE A SUSPECT AT A PALATKA RESIDENCE WHO THREATENED SEVERAL PEOPLE WEDNESDAY. PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE DEPUTIES WERE ABLE TO TALK JOE SMITH,AGE  36, OUT OF THE HOUSE BUT WHEN THEY ATTEMPTED TO GET HIM TO LEAVE THE PROPERTY HE BECAME AGITATED AND THREATENED TO KILL DEPUTIES. HE RESISTED EFFORTS TO ARREST HIM, KICKING AND PUNCHING AT DEPUTIES. WHEN A TASER WAS USED SMITH PULLED OUT THE PROBES WHILE PULLING THE LEADS TOWARD HIM AND CONTINUING TO FIGHT DEPUTIES. WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO FLEE, K9 HALO WAS RELEASED AND BIT HIM ON THE ARM PULLING HIM TO THE GROUND. SMITH CONTINUED TO RESIST AND BEGAN HITTING THE DOG REPEATEDLY BEFORE DEPUTIES SUBDUED HIM. SMITH WAS EVENTUALLY TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AND TRANSPORTED TO PUTNAM COMMUNITY MEDICAL CENTER. A ROCK-LIKE SUBSTANCE WAS FOUND ON HIM AND IS BEING TESTED. WHILE HALO WAS UNINJURED HIS HUMAN PARTNER SUFFERED A BROKEN FINGER. SMITH IS IN JAIL WITHOUT BOND ON A VARIETY OF CHARGES.

PEOPLE ARE RALLYING TO HELP KAREN ENGLE, THE PALATKA WOMAN WHO NEEDS A LUNG TRANSPLANT. ON AUGUST 2 AND 3 A BENEFIT FUND-RAISER IS PLANNED AT THE WOMAN’S CLUB OF PALATKA. YOU MAY REMEMBER A DONATION JAR FOR ENGLE AT LORI’S RESTAURANT IN PALATKA WAS RECENTLY STOLEN AFTER THIEVES SMASHED IN THE WINDOW OF THE BUSINESS.

TWO PALATKA MEN WERE ARRESTED IN A DRUG BUST YESTERDAY. MEMBERS OF THE DRUG UNIT EXECUTED A SEARCH WARRANT AT 141 HARMONY LANE FOLLOWING A SEVERAL MONTHS LONG INVESTIGATION. EDWARD DEAN FIELDS, 54, OF PALATKA AND HENRY DALE ELLIS, 51, OF PALATKA WERE AT THE RESIDENCE AT THE TIME OF THE SEARCH WARRANT. DURING THE SEARCH DETECTIVES FOUND MORE THAN 60 PRESCRIPTION PILLS, CRYSTAL METHAMPHETAMINE, DRUG PARAPHERNALIA, A FIREARM AND MORE THAN $1,000 IN CASH.

FIELDS WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF POSSESSION OF OPIUM OR DERIVATIVE, ONE COUNT OF METHAMPHETAMINE POSSESSION AND ONE COUNT OF DRUG EQUIPMENT POSSESSION. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE PUTNAM COUNTY JAIL AND HELD ON $13,000 BOND.

ELLIS WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE WITH INTENT TO SELL, POSSESSION OF OPIUM OR DERIVATIVE, MARIJUANA POSSESSION WITH INTENT TO SELL, POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION, POSSESSION OF A WEAPON BY A CONVICTED FELON AND DRUG EQUIPMENT POSSESSION. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE PUTNAM COUNTY JAIL AND RELEASED ON $30,500 BOND.

AND THERE ARE MANY DOGS AND CATS THAT ARE LOOKING FOR FOREVER HOMES STARTING TOMORROW DURING THE PUTNAM COUNTY ANUMAL CONTROL ADOTION EVENT.  IT WILL BE HELD FROM 10AM TO 2PM.  THERE ARE EXPECTED TO BE SEVERAL PUPPIES UP FOR ADOTION AND SOME KUITTENS TOO AS WEL AS ADULT DOGS AND CATS.  COST IS ONLY $5 AND THE ADOPTATHON WILL BE HELD SAT THE CENTER NEXT TO THE COURTHOUSE AT 523 REID STREET IN PALATKA.
