Raising costs for providing infrastructure and other services has area governments looking at new revenue sources. St. Johns County Commissioners are expected to discuss a penny sales tax increase at their Feb. 15 meeting. The issue would go on the November general election ballot. Officials say they have a backlog of more than $500 million in infrastructure needs. Increasing the sales tax from 6.5 cents to 7.5 cents on every dollar would bring in about $49.6 million additional funds a year. The board and county commission have been in a stalemate over the increase since the school board wanted to go from $3,600 to $7,175 for each new single family house built. The board is now talking an initial impact fee of $5,450. It will be the first increase in 17 years.
